Cushing has no background in hotels, but his family does. His great uncle was the founder of Squaw Valley Ski resort in 1949. Perhaps most importantly, he spent summers bouncing around Newport parties while he was growing up, observing and learning from the masters of high society entertaining. The one part of the hotel that’s a direct recreation of the Ledges is its sweeping lobby. The double-height space, with its black-and-white limestone and marble tile floor, is wrapped by a custom wallpaper inspired by a lush landscape mural painted by Cushing’s great-grandfather in 1905 at the Ledges. 1.)The house is made of more than 500,000 cubic feet of marble.

It was the most palatial residence in Newport until the appearance of the Gilded Age Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s. Mr. Vanderbilt was the grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who established the family's fortune in steamships and the New York Central Railroad. His older brother was Cornelius II, who built The Breakers. Alva Vanderbilt was a leading hostess in Newport society who envisioned Marble House as her "temple to the arts" in America.

At the time, such extramarital dalliances were certainly not unheard of among wealthy men, and were passively tolerated by New York society, but divorces were considered to be major scandals. Despite this, though, Alva retained her prominence in society, and also received a significant settlement in the divorce, including ownership of Marble House. However, Alva’s truly lavish spending did not begin in earnest until after William inherited the $65 million from his father in 1885. The following year, she ordered the construction of a yacht, which was, of course, named the Alva. It was the largest private yacht in the world at the time, and its 285-foot length was comparable to some of the largest ships in the US Navy at the time.
